Simplicity, you're not so simple

I'm a few nap time sewing sessions into the Halloween costume.  And I'm about three minutes from pitching it and heading to the store (a friend mentioned that she saw a gnome costume -- wouldn't that be adorable?).  The pattern is by Simplicity and I'm fed up with it!  For a long time, I stood with two pieces in my hand, rereading the instructions repeatedly and scratching my head.  I finally figured it out but jeesh, should it be so difficult?  The essential problem is that too many steps are combined together.  Simplicity is no Oliver + S, that's for sure!  Sewing with Oliver + S is like attending a sewing class.

But, I'm moving forward with the costume.  It won't be perfect and it won't last a thousand years (really, it needs to last one day).  I tried it on Dagim for fit yesterday and when I slipped it over his head to take it off, it got dirty.  What can I say?  It's fall and the boy has a constant runny nose.

Here are some pictures of the pattern and fabric.  Can you guess what it is yet?

This wasn't the fabric I planned on using but in an effort to spend less and re-purpose, I decided it was silly to buy a new yard of green fabric.  I had to finagle the pattern layout a bit to get it to work since it was just shy of being enough fabric -- so some pieces aren't placed the right way on the grain.  But, since Halloween is a one-day affair, I'm not worried about it.

I don't think I'll get anymore sewing time before I head to New Jersey/New York on Friday morning.  I'm sure the Simplicity pattern will be waiting, ready to go another round with me on Monday.

  1. I didn't realize you were Rubik's Cubing it to fit a too-small piece of fabric. I thought you were just being somewhat maniacal. You do resemble Wile E. Coyote when you receive these strange diagrams and plans in the mail from Simplicity/ACME.
