I'm a loser. No, wait.. I'm a winner!

I was trucking along quite nicely this weekend on the jacket.  I finished the hood on Friday and let Dagim run around the house with it on his head, yelling "Hat! Hat!" and then flinging it to the floor.  The fun ended when he picked it up with his teeth.  A small screech might have passed through my lips as I begged him to let go of it.  The hood came away unscathed, if a tiny bit wet.

By Saturday, the outside of the jacket was assembled, minus the sleeves:

By this afternoon I was sewing on the second sleeve and could barely believe that I'd get to tackle the lining before the weekend ended.  After I cut the thread and pulled the coat away from my sewing machine, I saw my terrible, stupid mistake.  I had sewn the second sleeve WRONG SIDE OUT!  Of all the stupid things to do!

After showing my husband my error and taking a few minutes to pout, I pulled out the seam ripper (which has been getting a lot of use lately) and got busy on that seam.  I don't know why (it's certainly not lack of practice) but ripping a seam out takes me a long time.  When the sleeve was literally hanging on by a thread, I saw my second terrible, stupid mistake of the day: I had ripped the seam of the WRONG SLEEVE!  That's right folks, I had just removed the good sleeve -- the one that had been attached to the coat correctly.  I felt like a total loser.  How could I make two mistakes in a row?

With both sleeves to re-do, I was ready to call it a day.  I took an internet break and checked out some of my favorite blogs.  I went on over to Progressive Pioneer to see if the latest giveaway winner had been announced so I could stop wishing for the wonderful Cloud 9 fabric.

And what do you think I saw?  My name!  I was the winner of the giveaway!  Can you believe it?  Talk about turning my day around.  I won a set of eight fat quarters of Cloud 9 organic cotton fabric.  I've had my eye on this since it was released recently.  I can't wait to make something adorable with it.  A big thank you to Amy at Progressive Pioneer and Pink Chalk Fabrics, a gem of an online fabric and pattern store.

With my spirits bolstered, and a gift of time from my husband (who took Dag to the art museum grounds for a tricycle ride), I got back to work on the jacket.  I re-attached both sleeves (correctly) and then whipped up the lining.

Now I just have to assemble the jacket, hood and lining.  Then I can move onto the quilted vest that will button inside.

I still feel quite stupid about my mistakes today.  I don't mind messing up while learning a new skill but my mistakes were because I wasn't paying attention.  Someone please tell me that you've made a silly sewing mistake too!

  1. I've managed to screw up every button that I try to reattach. Maybe it doesn't match your mistake, but it's frustrating nonetheless!

At least now you have a good story to tell in class (opposed to before...ugh!) :D

  2. You won! You won! Congrats!

As for mistakes, yup, we all make them. Your story made me laugh. Thanks for sharing and reminding us that all mistakes can be fixed.

Except for putting salt in my coffee the other morning. Salt cannot be removed from coffee.
