I kicked off Kids Clothing Week Challenge with a few hours of sewing in the rain. We found out last night that school was canceled for today because of an approaching typhoon. With Chris home, I was able to get a little extra sewing time in but of course, it's never enough! We have been stuck inside all day due to the rain and wind. It's probably the worst rain storm I've ever seen. At one point, I thought a huge tree outside was going to snap in half. I moved my sewing machine last night for fear that our windows would blow out -- fortunately, they did not. But we do have some water leaking into our bedroom from our balcony door which doesn't exactly have a tight seal. All in all, a rainy day inside with my boys has been pretty fun. We have plans for cookies and tea at 4pm.
Anyway, onto the first project of the week (my goal is two projects this week but we'll see how it goes).
I'm working on The Overmost from Whipstitch because I'm a sucker for a little boy in overalls. Did you know that Deborah Moebes (owner of Whipstitch) has a new book out called Stitch by Stitch and is currently doing a blog tour? I'd love to get my hands on the book. Maybe our next international Amazon order...
Here's the fabric for the overalls:
I should probably admit that I cut the fabric out last week:
But I didn't begin sewing until today:
I completed the outer fabric for the overalls. Still remaining: straps, lining, elastic, hem, buttons and buttonholes. I have a Chinese lesson during naptime tomorrow so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to accomplish.
Originally, I had planned to make the overalls with hip and back pockets. In the end, I ditched the back pockets. They seemed too small and I didn't feel like cutting out bigger pieces (and sometimes pockets look a little too "handmade" for my taste -- at least mine do). I did do the hip pockets and they are really cute -- just the right size for little hands to squirrel away items like acorns (although I'm not sure there are any acorns here).
Hopefully more progress tomorrow!
